In the last post, we talked about the wisdom of God's Word and how essential it is for believers to be reading it regularly. And if that isn’t enough, I don’t know about you, but my pastor and Sunday School teacher are always encouraging me to spend more time in God's Word.

But honestly, how? Between work, homeschooling, household chores, and kids’ activities, we can barely get five minutes alone in the bathroom. How are we supposed to get any quality time with the Lord? When we do try, it often doesn’t last long, and we end up feeling guilty because we didn’t succeed, again. Eventually, we might even stop trying altogether, just to avoid that feeling.

Of course, the enemy steps in and says, "Well, you can’t do it anyway, and there’s no real purpose for it, so don’t worry about it. You can do that later when the kids are grown and gone or when something else changes."

I’ve been there, and I get it. That’s why today, I’m sharing ten tips that have helped me, even as a busy mom and wife, to have some real quiet time with the Lord.

Why is Being in the Word So Vital?

Here are a couple of reasons as to how this is important to our Christian walk.

"For whatever things were written before were written for our learning, that we through the patience and comfort of the Scriptures might have hope." Romans 15:4

With all the things in the world that can discourage us, God's Word is the one truth that can give us wisdom and hope for the future. In our last post, we discussed how our Bibles hold the answers we need to face life's circumstances and trials.

His Word is truly sufficient for everything we need in life. Whether you’re looking for answers, guidance, wisdom, peace, direction, comfort, or healing, studying His Word is where you’ll find it.

The Enemy’s Discouragement

I also want to give a word of warning. The enemy is real, and he wants to discourage you from having a close relationship with Jesus Christ. He’ll do everything he can to distract and discourage you from spending time with the Lord.

In fact, he’s tried hard to keep me from finishing this post. But I have people praying, and we’re going to keep going. We fight the enemy not only with prayer but also with Scripture, just as Jesus did.

But He answered and said, 'It is written, "Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God."'" Matthew 4:4

This was Jesus’s response when Satan tried to tempt Him. God's Word is also a part of our armor.

"And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God." Ephesians 6:17

God’s Word is what we use to fight—for our marriages, for our children, and to raise them up in the Lord amidst a world that seeks to lead them into sin and destruction. His Word is our weapon against the lies and evil of this world.

Making Time for God: Examples from My Life

How do we find time to be in God’s Word, so we have what we need to fight the good fight? Let me give you some examples of what my quiet time has looked like over the years.

As my life has changed, so has my quiet time. When my kids were small, my quiet time was whenever I could fit it in—during nap time or their favorite TV show. If I happened to get up before they woke, I would use that time.

When they started school, I would drop them off in the morning, make myself some breakfast, and then spend time with the Lord. Later, when the kids were grown, I worked from home, so I’d start my day with coffee and God’s Word.

My Journey to Finding a Time That Works

About four years ago, things changed again. Moving from California to Texas, my schedule was completely disrupted by a full time job outside the home, and I struggled to fit in any kind of quiet time. I missed this time with the Lord and felt God calling me back to it, but I kept wondering, “Okay, Lord, when?”

I thought I could use my fifteen-minute morning break for quiet time. But even with the office door closed, people would knock, and then eventually, I was too busy to take a break anyway. Then, I tried my lunch break, sitting alone in my car, but I realized that during that time, I really needed to unwind from the stress of work for a bit.

Then a friend shared that she got up at five a.m. to spend time with the Lord. I thought, “Five a.m.? That’s early!” But I decided to try it. Now, for over three years, I’ve been getting up at five a.m., even on weekends, to spend time with the God. I love it so much that I wouldn’t change it for anything.

Hopefully, by reading my story, you have kleaned some ideas for yourself. To help you further, here are 10 tips to help you spend some quality time with God.

10 Tips for Making Quiet Time with God

1. Pray

God wants to spend this time with you, so ask for His help. Pray over each tip below, asking God to guide you in creating a quiet time that works in your life. Remember, there are no rules. This is your time with the Lord.

2. Make It a Priority

We seem to think that having a quite time is a luxury, something that is just for us, but it isn't. Your quiet time isn’t just about a few minutes with God for personal growth; it impacts your entire family.

As you grow in wisdom and strength through God’s Word, you’ll become a better mom, wife, and godly woman. You'll be better equipped to love and support your family through prayer and in sharing God's wisdom with them. It truly benefits the whole family.

If we weren’t friends already, I hope we are now because I’m about to give you some loving friendly advice . . .

3. Evaluate Your Time

Many things in our life can be more of a distraction than helpful for us, with social media, You Tube videos, and TV being some of the biggest. We go to look at one little thing, and before you know it we have lost an hour going down some rabbit hole of nothingness.

If you feel life is much too busy to spend any time with God, think about doing a little self-check to see where and how you currently spend your time. Are there any unnecessary distractions, time wasters, or any time that would be better spent growing your walk with the Lord?

Pray over this, asking, “Lord, are there times I’m spending on other things, things that aren't really that important, when I could be spending it with You?”

4. Choose a Time and Place

Having a set time and place for this every day will be very helpful in keeping you on track and not ending up at the end of the week realizing you've only accomplished this once all week.

Choose a time when you won’t be easily distracted, whether it’s in the morning, during lunch, or at night. Whatever works for you. Another great way to stay consistent is to combine your quiet time with another activity, like breakfast, while the kids are at ballet class, or right after you drop them off at school, like I used to do.

If you're doing this at home, find a comfortable, quiet spot and take a few minutes to get it all set so your Bible, journal, pen, or any other reading material is all ready to go when you are.

5. Set a Reminder

It takes 3 weeks to create a lasting habit. During that time, set an alarm on your watch, put a reminder in your phone, or place a sticky note on your fridge or bathroom mirror. This will help you to keep your commitment with the Lord as you build a new routine.

6. Keep Your Tools Ready

Remember in tip 4 I said to get your bible, journal, and any reading material ready to go. Now keep it there so you don't have to take what little time you do have, searching for them each day.

Having everything ready allows you to be calm and focused during your quiet time.

7. Set a Realistic Goal

There's no shame is starting small. Even 5 to 10 minutes, or reading a few verses each day, will have a big impact on your walk with the Lord. You can always build from there if time allows. It is the consistency that is more important than the length. Begin with a manageable goal, and add more as you’re ready.

8. Find an Accountability Partner

All of us do a little better at getting a task done when we know someone is going ask us about it. Ask a friend or family member to help hold you accountable. If you're a part of our Faith Lived Out Community on Facebook, let me know that you're looking for a little help with this and I'll be glad to support you. Having someone to pray and encourage you makes a big difference.

9. Begin with Prayer

  • Start each quiet time by inviting God to speak to you through His Word.

  • Focus on who God is—His sovereignty, love, and wisdom—before you begin.

  • Ask, “Lord, show me what You want me to learn and how You want to transform my life.”

10. Be Kind to Yourself

  • If you miss a day, don’t be discouraged. Just pick up where you left off.

  • Life happens, and God understands your heart. Return to Him the next day without guilt or regret.

Bonus Tip: Don’t Let the Enemy Discourage You

Change can be difficult, and starting something new is challenging, but it’s worth it. If you truly want God to guide and strengthen you and bring change to your life and family, spending time with Him is essential.

Remember, God wants to spend time with you and His Word is where you’ll find the wisdom, peace, direction, comfort, and hope you’re looking for.

Have a blessed day,

Nanci 🌷
