Praying God's Promises

Did you know that there are estimated to be over 7000 promises in the Word of God? And that each of them was given for the sole purpose of blessing you, His child. When you really stop to think about it, it is awe-inspiring! That the God of the universe, the One who created the heavens and the earth, has not only given us great and precious promises, but He is faithful to keep every single one of them.

“By which He has given to us exceedingly great and precious promises, so that through these things you might become partakers of the divine nature and escape the corruption that is in the world through lust.” 2 Peter 1:4

One of those promises is that His Word will not return unto Him void. This means, as we believe His promises and pray them for our husbands, children, and family, they will also not return unto Him void. There are scriptures that will guide us as we pray for strength, wisdom, health and healing, and forgiveness for ourselves and those who have hurt us. Learning what these promises are and praying them regularly, will change your life.

5 Life Changing Benefits of Praying God’s Promises

Gives Direction to Your Life

“I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my eye on you.” Psalms 32:8

The very best life that we could possibly have is to follow God‘s plan and to be at the center of His will. That’s what praying His promises does for us. It makes His thoughts our thoughts as He guides and directs our lives on the path that He has planned for us. Not that it will always be easy and without struggles, because trials are how we learn and how we grow in the Lord. But His plan for our lives, is also what brings us the greatest joy and peace.

Let’s You Know That You Are Not Alone

Have not I commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”

Joshua 1:9

As we’re going through life‘s challenges or when we’re hurting, praying the promises in the Word of God reminds us that we are not alone. We can be strong and courageous and not afraid because our sovereign God is with us. His power and His might are right there with us, helping us to continue on and move forward.

Reminds You That God is Faithful

Know therefore that the Lord your God, He is God, the faithful God, who keep covenant and mercy with them who love Him and keep His commandments to a thousand generations.” Deuteronomy 7:9

When we read the promises of God we are reminded of His faithfulness and that He is a God of miracles. Nothing is impossible with the Lord. We know that we can put our trust and our faith in Him. We don’t need to see what is going to happen next because we can trust Him for the outcome, whatever that may be. That is where our fear comes in. because we can’t see the future but the Lord does and He knows how it is all going to play out. We can trust Him for whatever that future is going to be because He is in control and He loves us with a great and mighty love.

Gives You Wisdom

If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all men liberally and without criticism, and it will be given to him.”

James 1:5

There are promises and direction in the Word of God on relationships, marriage, raising children, dealing with coworkers or bosses. Guidance for your finances, struggles with patience, or temptations. There are words of comfort when facing worries, discouragement, or grief. His Word is truth and a guide for your life.

When we are struggling through the circumstances of life, sometimes we're just not sure how to pray or what to pray for. Praying God’s promises that relate to our current situation and fears, helps us to know how to pray. It also helps us focus our attention on God and to pray for His will for our lives and not our own.

Gives You Hope

Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that you may abound in hope, through the power of the Holy Spirit.”

Romans 15:13

There are so many wonderful verses about hope, that I had a hard time choosing just one to share with you. You can’t help but have your heart lifted up, even in the middle of the most difficult of circumstances, as you read and pray about the hope we have in God. With Him, our future is bright. No matter what it may look like today, there is a light at the end. Scripture tells us that trials are only for a season. Praying His promises gives us hope where there was none.

What Praying His Promises Did For My Life

As I've mentioned before, my husband and I have had our own business for well over 20 years now. As with any business, there are times of flourishing and times of famine. During one of those times of famine, I started to pray God’s promises over our finances. Promises like;

“This Book of the Law must not depart from your mouth. Meditate on it day and night so that you may act carefully according to all that is written in it.

For then you will make your way successful, and you will be wise.” Joshua 1:8

“Give, and it will be given to you: Good measure, pressed down,

shaken together, and running over will men give unto you.

For with the measure you use, it will be measured unto you.” Luke 6:38

I was more than willing to follow God’s precepts to meditate on His Word and give to others the way the Lord had given to us in the past. I sought ways to make changes to help our financial situation but nothing worked. It seemed that every door I tried was closed in my face.

Then it was time for the dreaded tax appointment and this one was especially bad. We had had a time of flourishing during the previous year but towards the end, we had a falling out with our partner. When the partnership split, we basically had to start over. The appointment with my accountant revealed we were facing a tax bill of just over $10,000 that would be due in about 2 months. I was devastated.

To be honest, I lost it! I came home from that appointment so upset and so frustrated. After all the praying I had done, all the ways I had tried to change things and failed, and now this! At that

point we were barely doing $10,000 a month in sales, never mind enough to have that much

profit after paying expenses to pay taxes! I was

upset and angry at God. So much so that I didn’t want anything to do with Him or His Word.

Fortunately, even though I was unrighteously angry and upset at Him, God didn’t leave my side. Instead, He came to me with loving arms wide open, to heal

my hurt and calm my fears. He lovingly brought me back to my senses and a right relationship with Him. You can read all about it in the post entitled If You’ve Walked Away From God, Come Home.

So I went back to praying His promises and even asked God to do a miracle. That He would provide enough sales over the next 2 months that we would be able to pay at least half of what we owed when it came due and believe it or not, He did just that. Our sales increased at a phenomenal rate and on April 15th we sent in $5000 with our tax returns and paid the balance just a few months later.

Our God is faithful and is a God of grace, love, and miracles!

There are books available that have taken the promises written in Scripture and categorized them into various topics. It allows you to read several promises on things like discouragement, patience, forgiveness, marriage, doubt, and finances. This is super helpful in praying God’s promises. Here’s a link to a few I found.

You may also want to use a journal to write down the promises that you are praying for. You can write your prayer to the Lord or write down the circumstances or situation that you’re praying for. You will also want to be sure to record God’s answers to your prayers as well.

I’ve created a journal for this very purpose that has prompts to help you in your prayer time.

  • Scripture Reference: To record the promises or verses that pertain to what you are praying for.

  • God’s Promise: Choose one passage at each prayer time to write down and pray over.

  • My Prayer to the Father: Pour out your heart to God. Tell Him your needs, your hurts, and your wants. Change the pronouns in the scripture to your own name or the one you are praying for. Make it personal to you and your circumstances.

  • His Answer: Be sure to record when and how God answers your prayers. Then thank Him for His faithfulness.
